Who Was Thomas?

Thomas was born Feremenga, a name he later changed to Thomas during a period when he worked for a white family, reflecting the social influences of that era. Though short in stature, he was physically strong and known in his youth for his bold temperament and readiness to defend himself, especially during disputes at beer halls. With age, that fiery spirit matured into the composure of a respected elder.
He was a skilled hunter and a gifted mbira player, talents that earned him admiration within his community. Even in advanced age, Thomas retained remarkable eyesight and physical alertness, traits often remembered by those who knew him. He was brown-skinned and carried himself with quiet authority.
Thomas lived an exceptionally long life, passing away in 1984 at an age said to exceed one hundred years. Over his lifetime he married two wives, Muzondi and Chokurota, and raised a family whose descendants would carry forward his lineage.
At one point in his life, fearing witchcraft directed toward his household, Thomas made the decisive choice to move his family away from Pfungwe — a turning point described in The Heir Who Chose the River Over the Crown. This decision would later shape the course of his descendants’ history.
