Published March 15, 2026, 3:30 p.m. by Mike Thomas

In family histories, some names quietly carry the weight of generations. One such name is Tarusarira, remembered as the mother of Thomas Feremenga. Though little may be written about her in formal records, her story is preserved through lineage, place, and clan identity.

Origins in Mukosa

Tarusarira came from Mukosa, an area located east of what is now Rushinga District in northern Zimbabwe. Mukosa has long been a place where families, clans, and traditions have shaped the cultural landscape of the region.

For many Zimbabwean families, place is not simply geography. It represents ancestral roots, remembered migrations, and the land where family identity was formed. Tarusarira’s connection to Mukosa therefore places her within a long-standing network of communities and traditions in the north-eastern parts of Zimbabwe.

The Gumbato Clan – Zenda Totem

Tarusarira belonged to the Gumbato clan of the Zenda totem. In Shona culture, a mutupo (totem) identifies a person's clan and links them to their ancestral lineage. Totems are important markers of identity and are used in greetings, ceremonies, and family recognition.

Clan names such as Gumbato are often associated with praise expressions and oral traditions that preserve the memory of ancestors and the values they represented. Through these traditions, descendants remember where they come from and the lineages that shaped their families.

A Mother Remembered

As the mother of Thomas Feremenga, Tarusarira holds a place in the family story that connects generations. Mothers often serve as the bridge between clans, carrying the heritage of their own lineage into the families they help establish.

Through her origins in Mukosa and her identity within the Gumbato clan of the Zenda totem, Tarusarira’s memory remains part of a broader ancestral narrative. Her name continues to remind descendants of the places and traditions that formed their roots.
